Safety of Land Transportation
A safe transport by road and rail of passengers and goods requests an always growing reduction of accidents and implies technical solutions which guarantee a right operation, i.e. an high reliability, of the networks and of the vehicles which run on them. The matter assumes a particular relevance if dangerous goods are conveyed, since in this case population and territories could be involved with relevant damages to human beings and environment.
In this context many topics should be examined and deepened for actively contributing to improve transport safety: from technological solutions of accident prevention and mitigation regarding, for instance, vehicle and network construction, to management measures such as traffic distribution on different transport means or flow programming. Moreover specific procedures are needed when risks posed by dangerous substances have to be identified, calculated and examined to give useful solutions in territorial applications. And still, to outline another argument, considerations should be made on a particular kind of land transportation: the pipelines, which are fixed structures/plants where liquid, liquified or gas substances are conveyed.
The aim of the Committee is to promote initiatives of applied research in all the cited fields and to disseminate applications, having awareness that industrial and service activities, but especially populations, achieve benefits from a strong collaboration of all the actors involved (stakeholders, university and research organisation members, local authorities).
Activities of the Committee will be the organization of workshops, technical sessions and roundtables at ESREL Conferences Committee.
